It didn’t take many field outings for the Test4outside team to award the First Award to the Black Diamond Solution 2.0 Hoody Primaloft.

This jacket combines all the right technical features for outdoor adventures, mountaineering, climbing, skiing, ski touring, hiking, and more. Its insulation is made from Primaloft, which, in our opinion, is currently the best insulation material on the market. We have been using it for many years during our outdoor activities and prefer it over traditional down insulation. Why? Its main advantage is its ability to resist moisture and dry very quickly, since this synthetic fiber is hydrophobic.

While, on paper, it may appear less insulating than down, in reality, it is often more efficient. Unlike down, which is distributed in baffles, Primaloft is integrated in continuous layers. This means there are no thermal bridges, as the fibers do not collapse and remain stable over time. Another advantage: it does not retain unpleasant odors when exposed to moisture.

As expected, by choosing PRIMALOFT® Gold Cross Core insulation, Black Diamond gives this jacket outstanding thermal performance. Despite this, its thickness remains limited, making it easy to wear under a protective shell layer. Water-repellent and insulating, the PrimaLoft® insulation makes the jacket lightweight, warm, and highly resistant to humidity — essential qualities in changing mountain conditions. PRIMALOFT® Gold Cross Core technology combines high-performance GOLD synthetic fibers with Cross Core aerogel, originally developed by NASA, to maximize heat retention. Made up of more than 95% air, this ultra-light solid material acts as a true barrier against the cold. The result is an even more efficient, compact, and reliable thermal jacket, even when moisture appears at altitude.

The fit of the Black Diamond Solution 2.0 Hoody Primaloft is close to the body. If you plan to wear multiple base or mid-layers underneath, sizing up is recommended. The cut is excellent and follows body movement naturally, as the fabric remains flexible rather than stiff. The neck area is very well protected, as is the enveloping hood, which features a semi-rigid micro visor and a rear adjustment system.

The cuffs are lined with a soft and flexible fabric that comfortably accommodates a large watch while still preventing wind from entering. The sleeves are close-fitting, making it easier to clearly see and perform technical rope handling on a climbing harness, for example.

Two adjustment points allow fine tuning at the waist of the Black Diamond Solution 2.0 Hoody Primaloft. The central zipper works perfectly and never snags. The zipper pull is also easy to handle while wearing thin gloves.

The two hand pockets are zippered and soft on the inside. The jacket can be compressed and packed into one of its own pockets. In size M, we weighed it at 400 grams.
