It didn’t take many field outings for the Test4outside team to award a “First Test” distinction to the Black Diamond Solution 2.0 Hoody Primaloft.
This jacket brings together a wide range of effective technical features for outdoor use—mountaineering, climbing, skiing, ski touring, hiking, and more. Its insulation is made from PrimaLoft®, which we consider one of the best insulation materials currently available. We’ve been using it for many years in our outdoor activities and often prefer it over traditional down. Why? Its main advantage is its ability to resist moisture and dry very quickly, as this synthetic fiber is hydrophobic.
On paper, it may seem less insulating than down, but in real-world conditions, it often proves more efficient. It is integrated into the jacket in layers rather than in compartments like down. PrimaLoft® does not create cold spots, as the fibers do not clump and remain stable over time. It also doesn’t develop odors when exposed to moisture.
As expected, by choosing PrimaLoft® Gold Insulation Eco (60 g), Black Diamond delivers excellent thermal performance. Despite this, the jacket remains relatively thin, making it easy to wear under a protective shell.
The cut of the Black Diamond Solution 2.0 Hoody Primaloft is close-fitting. If you plan to wear layers underneath, you should size up. The fit is excellent, allowing full freedom of movement thanks to the non-rigid fabric. The neck area is very well protected, as is the enveloping hood, which features a semi-rigid micro visor and a rear adjustment system.
The cuffs are lined with a soft, flexible fabric that accommodates a large watch while still blocking out the wind. The sleeves are streamlined, making it easy to see what you’re doing—for example, when handling ropes on your harness.
Two adjustment points allow you to fine-tune the fit at the waist. The central zipper is smooth and doesn’t snag, and the pull tab can be operated with thin gloves.
The two hand pockets are zippered and soft on the inside. The Black Diamond Solution 2.0 Hoody Primaloft is packable and can be stored in one of its own pockets. In size M, we weighed it at 400 grams.
