We tested the Gore-Wear Storm Shorts (149.95 euros) for many months, which is different to the other model, the Gore-Wear Explore Shorts (119.95 euros) that don’t have a membrane but have the same cut and design. We wore them with the matching Gore-Wear Explore top.
The Gore-Wear Storm Short is designed for gravel riding, long bike rides in cold and wet weather. Take note, these are not bike shorts with a padded insert.
The Gore-Wear Storm Shorts are windproof, and waterproof as well thanks to the Gore-Tex Infinium Windstopper fabric. They weigh practically the same as the Explore shorts, give or take a gram: 205 g size M for 202g for the Explore.
Besides being windproof and waterproof on the trails and mountain passes, the Gore-Wear Storm Shorts are tough against rubbing and tears with encounters with bushes and other rough situations. The fabric is quite thick but remains comfy because it’s stretchy and moves with you when you pedal.
We liked the way the waistline is subtly and easily adjusted on both sides of the hips by a strap attached to an elastic at the back. This system is both firm and comfortable. There’s also a slight anti-slip silicone layer around the lumbar region.
As always, the Gore-Wear construction is carried out with the greatest care: the zips with little cords with ant-slip ends, careful seams, panel assemblies, design, etc.
We really liked the two hand pockets and the storage pocket on the left thigh. We were less convinced by the small safety zipped pocket front right, it sits right where your leg bends at the hip, and so you feel it when you’re pedalling. It is of course useful for storing some cash or other small flexible objects.
The Gore-Wear Storm Shorts aren’t especially very breathable, which is surprising as they are made from Gore-Tex fabric, let’s say we preferred using them when it was cooler outside.
The well-designed cut is more figure hugging than MTB shorts, it respects movements and long excursions out pedalling.
What’s missing on the Gore-Wear Storm Shorts? Reflective bands for minimal night safety.
A good product that you can also use for hiking or fast hiking.
The Gore-Wear Storm Shorts are designed for gravel riding, long biking excursions in cool and wet weather. They don’t have a padded insert. They are very interesting because of their waterproofness, comfort, design and toughness.
