We really enjoyed using the Millet Ubic 30 in the field. Millet fully embraces the idea of having designed a versatile backpack originally intended for hiking and skiing. We can confirm that its winning formula goes far beyond these two activities: the Millet Ubic 30 is also highly effective for climbing, mountain biking, via ferrata, and more.
So, is it average at everything and good at nothing? Not at all. Built around a proven technical foundation, especially in terms of carrying comfort, the Millet Ubic 30 offers smart and practical features that make it suitable for a wide range of users. In the end, the designers also succeeded in preventing it from becoming overly complicated.
Made from high-quality, durable materials, the Millet Ubic 30 provides excellent carrying performance. The back panel uses very comfortable foam padding, and the flexible structure follows body movements naturally without restriction. The hip belt is wide and heavily padded, preventing the pack from swaying. The ergonomically shaped shoulder straps are equally well designed. As a result, the pack can comfortably carry heavy loads when needed — including a rope, snowboard, skis, and more.
It should also be noted that the Millet Ubic is available in several capacities. A women-specific version with an adapted back length is also available.
The list of technical and comfort features is quite extensive: hand-rest straps, load lifters, a hip-belt pocket with adjustable volume using Velcro (extremely practical for large smartphones), a rain cover stored in a removable pouch, and more. The numerous straps and attachment points make it easy to secure technical gear. The fabric is durable and almost waterproof — at the very least, highly water-repellent.
We particularly appreciated the ability to access the inside of the bag without using the top opening. A large zipper allows the Millet Ubic 30 to open almost completely. You do need to remove two straps first, although they do not necessarily have to be clipped in place.
What criticisms could be made of the Millet Ubic 30? We looked hard — perhaps the absence of an emergency whistle? Or its €180 price tag? The price may be debatable, but it likely reflects the cost of a durable, well-designed, and versatile product.
