Patagonia Nano-Air Light Hoody

FIRST

With this type of product, the bar is set high. Brands offer proven solutions when it comes to these insulating jackets, designed to be worn either on their own or as mid-layers. The differences come down to the quality of the materials, the fit and the durability.

The Patagonia Nano-Air Light Hoody is undeniably an excellent product, although it comes with a high price tag. Two key strengths stand out immediately: its light weight — our scale showed 370 grams — and the exceptional comfort of the jacket. Some testers described it as a “cosy nest”. Indeed, you don’t get that feeling of smooth, cold fabrics that can be slightly noisy. The Patagonia Nano-Air Light Hoody feels warm and welcoming in every sense of the word.

Then there is the warmth. It is very pleasant because it never feels excessive, and Patagonia has clearly left room for breathability. This is our personal impression, but the insulation seems to work particularly well with the recycled ripstop lining. The whole jacket stretches easily and follows your movements, providing a high level of comfort.

You can’t help wondering about the overall durability if the jacket gets caught on a branch or scraped against a rock. The fabric handles rubbing and abrasion well, but it is less robust in truly extreme conditions. To be fair, the Patagonia Nano-Air Light Hoody is most often worn underneath a waterproof protective shell.

Breathable and warm without being overly so, it is well suited to outdoor activities that can be fairly intense. It offers a certain degree of water repellency, although slightly less than some other insulated jackets, such as the Black Diamond Solution 2.0 Hoody Primaloft. On the other hand, it is more breathable.

The fairly close-fitting cut is excellent. Particular attention has been paid to the cuffs, which are both very comfortable and well fitted: even large GPS watches pose no problem. The hood is also well shaped and provides excellent thermal protection. The same goes for the collar, which wraps around the neck very effectively.

All the zippers run smoothly and feature thin cords to make opening the pockets easier. The Patagonia Nano-Air Light Hoody also has two very practical chest pockets, which is unusual enough to be worth highlighting.

The construction is meticulous. The DWR treatment is PFAS-free.

An exceptionally comfortable insulated jacket, with a reasonable weight but a high price tag. The fit has been carefully designed to provide maximum thermal protection. We awarded the Patagonia Nano-Air Light Hoody a First Award, and it is a well-deserved recognition.
