We are very familiar with the Deuter Traick 9 trail running vest. This time, we tested it with the HydraPak Soft Flask 500 ml flasks, which are now supplied with the vest, increasing the retail price from €135 to €150. These flasks are practical, easy to screw closed, and feature openings wide enough to easily add hydration powder.
The Deuter Traick 9 clearly focuses on minimalism and weight reduction. At 180 grams on our scale (without the flasks), it definitely belongs to the lightweight category, even though it could still be made slightly lighter with more aggressive choices. That said, Deuter has intelligently balanced performance and durability.
This is a very comfortable vest that literally hugs the body. The materials are stretchy and never restrict movement, while still allowing the user to carry the minimum mandatory gear for relatively short distances. In action, the vest remains completely silent: no snapping elastic cords or loose straps bouncing around.
We appreciated the simplicity and almost stripped-down design of the Deuter Traick 9 L. Storage spaces are intuitive, and the systems for attaching poles or a hydration bladder never become overly complicated. Everything feels natural and straightforward. We were initially a little skeptical when receiving the Deuter Traick 9 L because it comes with a set of modular elastic cords designed to optionally secure additional gear. The downside is that they can potentially be lost. The upside is that you only use them if needed, and since they are removable, they never clutter the vest unnecessarily.
Poles can be attached either at the rear of the vest or at the front along the shoulder straps. The thin elastic cords require some handling to properly secure them. In our opinion, a removable quiver remains the better option.
The only real drawback of the Deuter Traick 9 L concerns the chest fastening system, which is not particularly easy to operate in cold conditions. The clips require precision to hook into the cord loops.
There are also still quite a few internal labels to cut away at the back panel.
A very good trail running vest, now supplied with flasks. A lightweight and thoughtfully designed product.
