These trail running shorts, which can of course also be used for hiking, place a strong emphasis on lightweight performance (150 grams) and breathability. Thanks to the softness and flexibility of the fabrics used, the Odlo X-Alp Trail 6 Inch is exceptionally comfortable to wear. It also dries very quickly. While it offers reasonable resistance to contact with bushes and vegetation, it remains a lightweight performance product that deserves a certain level of care.
During steep climbs that require a full range of leg movement, the integrated liner follows every motion perfectly and never feels restrictive. The liner is also very comfortable because it remains relatively cool against the skin. That said, the Odlo X-Alp Trail 6 Inch is better suited to mild or mid-season conditions than to extremely hot summer temperatures. The flatlock seams are completely unnoticeable during activity. However, in our opinion, the liner could provide slightly more support if the shorts are worn without additional underwear.
The other aspect that could be improved on this otherwise highly convincing product concerns the waist adjustment cord. Would an automatic locking system be possible, eliminating the need for repeated knot tying? Waist adjustment is particularly important because the Odlo X-Alp Trail 6 Inch allows folded trekking poles to be carried across the lower back. The front storage compartments can also accommodate energy bars, while a zipped pocket provides a secure place for keys. All of this additional equipment inevitably adds weight and creates downward pull on the shorts. Fortunately, the wide elastic waistband handles most of the stabilization and support duties effectively. Care must be taken to position the waistband correctly to avoid unwanted folds. In practice, this product functions both as a pair of trail running shorts and as an integrated running belt for carrying essential gear.
