We had praised the fantastic La Sportiva Prodigio Pro to the point of awarding it our First Award. So, how does the La Sportiva Prodigio 2 compare with its bigger sister, a benchmark shoe renowned for its exceptional responsiveness and dynamic ride? Let’s say it straight away: the Prodigio 2 has a completely different character.
The La Sportiva Prodigio 2 focuses on stability, a strength that was never compromised during our testing. After extensive trail testing, this is clearly its greatest asset. Foot placement is highly secure, ground contact is direct, and we noticed no rolling or compression of the midsole foam. The La Sportiva Prodigio 2 therefore allows you to move confidently through technical terrain. This reassuring feeling is further enhanced by the grip, which is effective across the entire outsole. The sole never clogs up in mud, and no stones get trapped in the lugs.
From the very first strides, you also notice that the cushioning is more pronounced under the heel, while remaining very subtle beneath the forefoot. This limited level of filtration obviously contributes to the shoe’s precise foot placement, but over longer race distances, you do feel the terrain a little more. Another point for discussion is the very neutral character of the sole, which delivers relatively little energy return. The rocker is also fairly modest. We would have liked a little more liveliness and bounce from the La Sportiva Prodigio 2. In short, what you gain in stability, you lose in responsiveness.
The heel is firmly locked into the La Sportiva Prodigio 2. Foot hold is excellent, and some of our testers even described it as “powerful.” The lacing system is a model of its kind across the instep. The toe box is well designed, with a more generous volume that gives the toes room to move. The tongue stays firmly in place. The toe protection is also excellent.
The mesh is robust. Both the construction and build quality of the La Sportiva Prodigio 2 contribute to the shoe’s good overall durability. We weighed it at 280 grams in a size 42.5, and it disappears underfoot once you get into your stride.
A trail running shoe that puts stability first for technical terrain. Excellent foot hold and grip. Cushioning and energy return are somewhat limited.
