AsicsBlazeblast

Let’s be honest: when we unboxed the ASICS Blazeblast, we were surprised to discover that it was designed for trail running. For a moment, we actually thought we had received a shoe from ASICS’ Blast series — the Novablast, Superblast and so on — all road-running shoes!

Once the initial surprise had passed, we discovered a shoe designed for curious runners who want to move from the road to less technical trails, and perhaps also for trail runners looking for an energetic shoe that feels equally at home on the road.

From the very first strides, it becomes clear that the sole and rocker geometry propel the runner forward, providing assistance and encouraging you to pick up the pace. We really loved the combination of speed and the very pleasant comfort provided by the cushioning under the entire foot. There’s no doubt about it: while it isn’t a pure racing shoe, the ASICS Blazeblast delivers plenty of exciting sensations.

Another thing we noticed immediately was how well the foot is held in place, without any tendency to roll inward into pronation. The internal heel platform has clearly been carefully designed, as have the upper and reinforced lacing system. There is plenty of foam around the heel for comfort, although we would have liked a little more support and lockdown in this area. The rest of the upper also prioritizes comfort without necessarily sacrificing precision.

The foot sits relatively high in the ASICS Blazeblast, but there is no real feeling of instability. The shoe is fairly wide and provides a solid connection with the ground, provided you stay within its intended range of use. The only slight weakness is its relatively low torsional rigidity. That said, the transition through the stride and the forward roll onto the forefoot are smooth and fluid. The overall feeling is that you are benefiting from many of the features of a modern road-running shoe. Our size 42.5 weighed in at 265 grams.

The grip deserves a closer look. Some “pure” trail runners may criticize it, but the shoe was designed for less technical terrain and not necessarily muddy conditions. The relatively limited grip is intentional and suited to rolling, moderate-gradient trails. ASICS has clearly made a deliberate choice here. The toe protection is also present, although it remains fairly flexible.

An unconventional shoe, born from the road and designed to play in the world of trail running. Remarkable bounce, energy return and cushioning make it a real pleasure to run in on less technical terrain. Overall grip is limited, but that is part of the shoe’s intended purpose. A successful bridge between road running and trail running.
