Dynastar M-Cross 88

FIRST

This Dynastar all-mountain ski, the M-Cross 88, was tested in the 176 cm length. It features a 14-meter turn radius. It is a quintessential all-mountain ski with a personality that leans perhaps a bit closer to off-piste than on-piste, even though it feels completely comfortable in both realms. Let us explain.

The Dynastar M-Cross 88 has a very well-designed tip splay (rocker). The forebody does a massive amount of work off-piste, allowing the ski to float over snow clumps, stay on top of powder, and absorb moguls and bumps. Even if the tip moves around quite a bit, it allows you to charge very fast.

The Dynastar M-Cross 88 is exceptionally easy to pivot across all conditions: in powder, through the trees, and around moguls. All you have to do is stand upright, and presto—it turns without demanding any special technical skill or heavy physical strength. A lighter skier can pilot it with ease. In a straight line, the Dynastar M-Cross 88 washes out or wanders surprisingly little, which makes it great on-piste for laying down long, straight tracks.

On-piste, however, when you step on the gas on hardpack, the tip vibrates quite a bit up front, but that never comes at the expense of edge hold. The grip is solid, allowing you to push into fairly steep edge angles, and the major added bonus is being able to tighten your turn radius. Doing so is not very difficult: you just have to work the flex of the ski a bit, which is remarkably coherent from forebody to tail. Opening up and lengthening the turn radius is even easier.

The Dynastar M-Cross 88 is therefore a high-performing yet accessible ski, with a clear affinity for off-piste terrain. It is secure underfoot and grippy when called upon. If you want to ease off the pressure and relax your stance, it does so effortlessly. A true Swiss Army knife, exceptionally comfortable across a wide range of setups.

It boasts good glide performance and is not a heavy ski. In terms of finishing details, the steel edge extends well up into the tip, and here comes a great bonus: Dynastar seamlessly integrated the metal tip protector flush into the tip design.Beautiful craftsmanship.

What might it be missing? Perhaps a textured grip surface ahead of the bindings to make shoulder carrying easier. Nice overall graphic look.

It might not look flashily imposing at first glance, but it is high-performing, accessible, and thoroughly enjoyable on the snowpack. Test4outside First Award.
