Arc'Teryx Sylan 2

Two things need to be distinguished regarding this new Arc’teryx Sylan 2.

First, there are the initial impressions. Right out of the box, the shoe has a very strong smell of glue or solvent—similar to some NNormal models. You then discover a shoe that is not easy to put on, especially if you have a high instep.

Once on foot, this Arc’teryx Sylan 2 feels less stiff than the first version. In any case, runners with a refined stride will find a stable shoe (thanks to the addition of the new carbon plate?) with a fairly direct feel, though not harsh, as there is cushioning in the heel. Shock absorption is also noticeably less pronounced under the metatarsals.

The stiffness that characterized the first version of the Sylan seems to have been smoothed out. Version 2 offers excellent propulsion thanks to an efficient and fluid forward rocker. There’s no doubt about it: the Arc’teryx Sylan 2 makes you want to pick up the pace, especially on smooth, runnable trails. Its relatively shallow lugs still provide good grip on less technical terrain, with the Vibram outsole adapting well. In muddy sections, however, the Sylan 2 quickly loses traction.

Another debatable point is the tiny lace garage on the tongue. Made from stretch fabric, it presses the laces firmly against the top of the foot, which can cause discomfort. This is a shame, because the ankle area is well designed, with a comfortable knit collar that prevents debris from entering the shoe.

We weighed it at 272 grams (size 42 2/3).

The Arc’teryx Sylan 2 is meticulously constructed, with an excellent rock guard, durable mesh, and a very precise heel hold.

We see the Arc’teryx Sylan 2 as best suited for short to medium trail distances, as its cushioning requires precise foot placement. A solid option for going fast, in the hands (or rather, on the feet) of a runner with a refined stride.
