Atomic Ultra XTD 130 BOA GW

The Atomic Ultra XTD 130 BOA GW belongs to the currently limited circle of alpine boots equipped with the Boa system. For this winter, four brands have made this choice: K2, Fischer, Salomon, and Atomic.

Within the Amer group, which owns Salomon and Atomic, the brands have positioned these two Boa-equipped boots differently. Salomon focuses on alpine skiing, while Atomic targets an all-mountain program with its Ultra XTD 130 BOA GW.

This Atomic Ultra XTD 130 BOA GW is a very good boot that we liked a lot despite a rather thin and not very warm liner. Atomic has prioritized lightness to save weight on the ascent since this boot is switchable between ski/walk modes.

The transition from uphill to downhill is made possible by the small cord at the back of the Atomic Ultra XTD 130 BOA GW. Sometimes the lever gets stuck, and it’s easier to simply pull the lever with your hands. Also, when you release the safety binding with the other ski, you can accidentally cut the cord. Its lifespan is therefore very short. The light closure strap of the boot is very good. However, the extremely practical metal buckle, very powerful in closure, easy to handle, is quite heavy.

The fit of this Atomic Ultra XTD 130 BOA GW is excellent. It’s precise and high-performing. Lateral energy transfers were judged to be excellent. There is the ability to ski really hard with this boot. The 130 flex feels respected.

The wrapping provided by the Boa closure is also very relevant. There are no pressure points, and the precision is high. It’s worth noting that the adjustment is micrometric. A minor downside is that the Boa dial could be angled in the other direction to make opening it easier, especially with mittens. Nevertheless, the closure is excellent.

The Atomic Ultra XTD 130 BOA GW is equipped with a very flexible sole, which is very useful when walking on ice or sidewalks. It truly has excellent grip.

The top buckles make some noise, and the perceived quality is not very high. Again, the pursuit of weight savings led to certain choices.

The range of motion of the Atomic Ultra XTD 130 BOA GW in walk mode with the top buckles closed is very relevant. It’s even more interesting when you open the top of the walk mode. A real plus for freerando use.

While the comfort is real, your feet can quickly get cold in the liner. The liner has straps at the top to facilitate putting it on. But opening the shell is not necessarily very easy and can be a bit painful at the instep. You really need to widen it.

This Atomic Ultra XTD 130 BOA GW is a very versatile boot with significant flex. In a freerando context, it allows for strong edge engagement while benefiting from the precise closure of the Boa system.
