The Head Kore 87 is a powerful ski. Manufactured with care and quality materials. You can go fast but you need a bit of time to get used to it, in terms of balance for example. You mustn’t lean too far back; you need to keep your stance forward.
At the outset you wonder how it will be because it chatters a bit, vibrates. Later when you’ve sussed out its character you can appreciate its turns. Downward pressure on the edge is pretty nice on longer turns. It doesn’t like shorter turns as much, but you can do them with a little effort. On very hardpacked snow it’s not always easy to change the radius, you need perfect weight distribution and technique.
The Head Kore 87 is surprisingly easy to skid turns despite its side cut (130 in tip). As we have a powerful ski underfoot, engineered with quality materials, you wonder if it’ll be tough to pull out of a carve. Not at all. You can dose it and vary the angles easily.
You can ride it with an upright stance, but it isn’t an ultra-easy ski in terms of pivoting. The Head Kore 87 is not designed for the laid-back skier. You need concentration and to be active.
On piste it was a dream for going super-fast, it is capable of sharp acceleration. As the speed picks up you can feel the stiffness but it’s reassuring on hardpack. Despite this sound grip the Head Kore 87 doesn’t have an indefectible grip (it depends on your angle and weight/speed ratio).
Off-piste we loved its ability to come through any difficulties in its way because its tip lift really crushes mounds, all without any difficulty, even if your balance is out a bit (backwards momentarily).
The Head Kore 87 is really well-finished, engineered with care. Its graphics were described as sad and dull, which is a shame because they don’t reflect the ski’s energetic character.
The Head Kore 87 is a brilliant ski for going faaaast, for those who have the thighs for it. A great product that accelerates superbly off-piste, in chop and powder. Serious s***. At first you need to get in the groove and once sorted it’s a dream. We gave this ski the CORE Award.
