We know this Hoka One One Mach very well. We have run with them a lot and tested the last two versions: the Mach and Mach 2.
Over the years, the modifications have been minor and that’s good, we still have the same DNA of these shoes that are designed to go fast on the road, on a triathlon race, for example, and formats, we believe that don’t exceed half-marathon distance.
Because it is a model that has direct ground contact you quickly realize the benefits that can be drawn from it. Each foot strike returns energy and therefore acceleration. If you run them with precision and directness, either mid-foot or forefoot you will have superb performance.
Don’t expect good cushioning. It is quite minimal under the forefoot with a little present under the heel (the edge of the heel) but nothing major. We very quickly find the hard point, the moment when the sole no longer compresses. May as well be direct about it, as you need to have a good foot strike otherwise you’ll suffer.
The Hoka One One Mach 3 are very precise shoes despite looking a little clumsy. The oversize exterior design may suggest this, but they aren’t.
They are lightweight, even if over the versions, they have gained a few grams. For the same size (42 2/3), our scales said 220g for the Mach, 227g for the Mach 2 and 232g for the model 3: the small strap’s weight that was added to help put them on? Not super aesthetic, but so practical.
No, the real difference with the previous version concerns the fabric they used, which on version 3 is no longer stretch. At the forefoot, in the toe box, we no longer have this slight impression of floating around. On the Hoka One One Mach 3, the fit is good in this area. It almost feels like the shoes have got narrower, we don’t think that’s the case. The fabric no longer stretches and provides a very tight foothold. So be careful when buyong the Mach 3 try them on in the shop.
The 5mm drop is unchanged (24 in the heel, 19 at the forefoot) and very efficient flat lace adjustment: nothing moves. The thin, filtering tongue is also well designed, and stays in place.
The heel area is well-formed and the entire malleolus region is also well treated with no rubbing. They have a top class perceived quality with detailed finish, except for the non-aesthetic heel (see photo).
The Mach 3 is a (slight) evolution or correction of the previous version. The mesh is no longer slightly stretchy at the toe box. We have shoes that are dynamic and direct, tuned to performance, speed, and with limited cushioning. To be reserved for shorter distances.
