We decided to test this hydration bladder for anyone looking to upgrade their trail running vest or hiking backpack, whether as a complement to soft flasks or as a complete replacement.
One thing to note: the sample we received does not feature an insulated hose. The HydraPak Velocity 2L has been thoughtfully designed, striking an excellent balance between practicality and low weight. We weighed it at just 185 g (6.5 oz) empty.
The drinking tube can be disconnected from the base of the reservoir, making it easier to route through a pack. A small black tab at the top of the HydraPak Velocity 2L helps with both filling and carrying. In the interest of keeping the weight down, HydraPak has not included a rigid plastic handle or filling aid. As a result, you need to spread the opening apart carefully when filling the reservoir, and you may end up with a little water or sports drink on your fingers. Cleaning is also slightly less convenient than on some competing designs.
The closure system is simple and reliable. Just slide the plastic clip into place to seal the reservoir; it also serves as the attachment point for hanging the bladder inside your pack. Clear instructions are even printed on the reservoir to ensure proper use.
The removable hose is another highlight. Even when pinched, it quickly returns to its original shape without kinking, ensuring an uninterrupted flow of liquid. This may seem like a small detail, but it’s an important one, and some competing products still fall short in this area. On the downside, we would have preferred the hose to be fully transparent so it would be easier to spot any bacteria or residue that could develop after using sugary drinks. Fortunately, a transparent replacement tube is available from the manufacturer. As with any hydration bladder, the entire HydraPak Velocity 2L should be thoroughly cleaned after every outing.
We also appreciated the bite valve, which features a highly effective shut-off mechanism. Once again, the design is compact rather than bulky, helping to keep the overall weight to a minimum.
Overall, the HydraPak Velocity 2L is an efficient, lightweight hydration bladder well suited to mountain biking, trail running, and trekking. It combines proven technical solutions with high-quality materials to deliver reliable performance.
