Tested in the 178 cm length with a narrow 68 mm waist and an 18.3-meter turn radius, the Kästle RX12 GS bears a clear promise right on its topsheet: “Fast as ever.” And on the snow, that promise is fully kept. Long, sleek, literally glued to the snow with a long effective edge and an unshakably stable tip, this ski built for big turns is a wonderful machine for generating speed.
Beneath its race-inspired giant slalom appearance, the RX12 GS could have been a dominant, demanding monster. It is nothing of the sort. Granted, it goes very fast and requires the athletic capacity to match its ambitions—especially on open pistes where you need to hold the arc at full tilt—but its tail is far from a trap. With no excessively harsh zone underfoot and no punishing tail, it tolerates minor positioning errors: if precision slips, the ski smoothly transitions into a skidded turn without roughing up the pilot or punishing mistakes. You always keep a way out.
When carving on moderate slopes, the ski is an absolute treat: it locks onto its rail, rolls smoothly with complete serenity,and even accepts varied turn radii if you apply heavy pressure (an exercise where heavier skiers will find a distinct advantage). As soon as the slope steepens, the RX12 GS holds its radius with impeccable edge grip, but the acceleration becomes phenomenal. You then have to work it physically to force the turn shut, at the risk of breaking loose if you push it too far. In a straight line, its stability is imperial and it never wanders.
On the manufacturing front, it is pure Kästle: impeccable, razor-sharp finishing, exceptional base glide, a handsome metallic tail protector, and a highly durable topsheet (though the added, screwed-on tip protectors are a slight miss).
An exceptional, race-inspired piste ski that delivers ultra-high performance and royal stability at high speeds, while retaining the forgiving nature of a ski that can easily be put sideways if needed. Best reserved for athletic, technical skiers on wide-open runs!
