If we could compare the Petzl Canyon Guide harness to a car test, we would say that we tested an SUV: “the SUV’s biggest bonus point is its versatility. Journeys will never be the same again“.
Comfort, safety, hefty, all options, and robust. This is what we thought about the Petzl Canyon Guide. It is aimed at independent users and guides.
Comfortable and ergonomic thanks to its wide semi-rigid belt. Once adjusted it supports the lumbar region to provide a feeling of safety but also comfort and relaxation on long pitches. The stainless steel Doubleback buckle adjustment system is very easy to use but it has a tendency to loosen a little around the thighs. There’s a colour-code system identical to the Petzl Canyon Club harness to make demonstrations easier.
We say “all options” because it has:
A metal ventral attachment point is positioned high giving optimal usage for clipping on kit (lanyard, descender, ascender, etc.), particularly the descender for comfortable rappelling.
Four pre-shaped gear loops with protective sheaths, two horizontal and two vertical, to carry any kit for all circumstances. Very practical when you want to clip on a light bag during a rappel or to deviate the rope.
Four belt loops to clip on light weight bags and store the descender. The loop under the ventral attachment point is ideal for attaching a heavier bag or for creating a deviation and can also be used to transfer a person during rescue.
Our long-term test enabled us to confirm that the protective seat is very durable. It efficiently protects your wetsuit and harness webbing from abrasion. And even if you are experienced at sliding you can change the seat and has three different colours (green, orange, and black).
And the final touch so you don’t get your aquatic SUV pinched: there’s an identification panel integrated into the harness to track your kit.

The Petzl Canyon Guide harness is aimed at amateurs and professionals for intense use. Overall this is a very good harness that has everything you need to go up against long aquatic adventures. But like our celebrated SUV, it’s lacking lightness. Even if once you are in the water you don’t notice its weight, on the walk in you feel the weight in your pack.
