Teva Aventrail 2T W

The days of the simple flip-flop upgraded with a few Velcro straps wrapped around the foot are long gone. Teva has taken that original concept—initially designed for beach and water activities—and evolved it into a versatile range of footwear suited to a wide variety of outdoor pursuits.

Today, the brand offers lifestyle, travel, water sports, hiking, and trail-oriented models, all while preserving the distinctive sandal design that has become both instantly recognizable and iconic.

For this review, we tested the women’s Teva Aventrail 2T, a model designed to bridge the gap between outdoor adventure, trail running, and off-road exploration.

Our first impression was overwhelmingly positive. The Aventrail 2T strikes an appealing balance between sporty performance and modern style, avoiding an overly feminine aesthetic. It is a contemporary sandal that looks equally at home with sportswear, casual outdoor clothing, or even everyday urban outfits.

Our testers particularly appreciated the padded ankle lining and the thoughtfully designed rolled zigzag seams, which remained comfortable throughout activity and prevented chafing.

On the trail, the foot felt securely held in place by the three W-shaped straps and durable hook-and-loop closures, finished with reinforced strap ends for easier adjustment. Firmly anchored into the HYPER-COMF midsole, these three straps provide precise, active support around both the ankle and midfoot. The open construction promotes excellent ventilation, helping regulate moisture and keeping the feet comfortable throughout long outings.

Grip is provided by the 3.5 mm Spider Rubber outsole, whose multidirectional chevron-shaped lugs proved reassuringly effective on loose rocks and uneven terrain, helping us avoid more than a few slips. The Aventrail 2T inspires confidence on both technical and softer surfaces.

Comfort is further enhanced by the high-stack, rockered sole. Beyond its modern appearance, the upward-curved toe helps reduce impacts against rocks and offers welcome protection for the toes when encountering obstacles on the trail. Naturally, it cannot match the protection of the reinforced toe cap found on a dedicated trail running shoe, but it still provides a noticeable level of reassurance.

The midsole strikes a well-balanced compromise between firmness and cushioning. It delivers a comfortable ride, although runners seeking a particularly energetic or highly responsive feel may wish for a little more rebound. The shoe features an 8.5 mm drop (31 mm at the forefoot and 39.5 mm at the heel), while the rocker geometry promotes smooth and efficient forward transitions.

One feature that deserves special mention is the generous width of the sole platform. It significantly improves stability by limiting both lateral ankle roll and excessive twisting through the foot, while also providing reassuring support on off-camber terrain. At the same time, the sole maintains enough longitudinal flexibility to encourage a natural heel-to-toe transition.

Another advantage is the Aventrail 2T’s suitability for climbers and hikers with bunions (hallux valgus). Thanks to its open-sided design, the sandal accommodates wider forefeet comfortably, although the hook-and-loop straps may need to be extended close to their maximum length.

The key question, however, remains: is this truly a trail running shoe? In our opinion, the answer is no, despite Teva positioning it as one. We see the Aventrail 2T instead as an excellent cross-training tool that encourages different foot mechanics, activates stabilizing muscles, and promotes proprioception. It makes an ideal addition to a weekly training routine, offering a refreshing alternative to conventional trail shoes.

As a dedicated trail running shoe, however, its open construction inevitably imposes limitations. Without a protective upper, the foot remains exposed to impacts, rocks, debris, and other trail hazards. It is therefore best suited to smooth trails, forest paths, gravel tracks, or occasional running sessions rather than demanding technical terrain.

With the Aventrail 2T, Teva successfully expands its sandal lineup into the trail and outdoor performance category. Elite runners tackling highly technical terrain will quickly reach the model’s limits. Recreational outdoor enthusiasts, on the other hand, will find a thoughtfully designed, comfortable, and versatile sandal that performs well across a wide range of activities while offering a unique alternative to traditional trail footwear.
