Völkl Kanjo 84

We found it difficult to place the Völkl Kanjo 84 midway between a wide evolution ski and a real all mountain ski that needs better skills off piste to carry this title.

Despite being wide the Kanjo has a low-lift tip with a slight rocker. The ski doesn’t float, lift out or help pivoting, even if the flat turns are standard for this type of ski.

When you ski fast on irregular snow, the tip doesn’t really absorb or bend much, it has a tendency to take off: which is fine for going fast but all the vibrations are absorbed by your legs. Same thing on bumpy ground. However on snow that i smore even, on or off piste, you find more fluidity.

The Völkl Kanjo 84 does as it’s stated but not much more. During this test we tried to doing turns in different manners, leaning, different angles, on gentle slopes: we managed to lengthen the radius quite evenly. The Kanjo could be used as a beginner’s ski if you stay on this type of terrain that isn’t too demanding.

On steeper slopes you need a lot of angle to exploit it: ankles, knees and hips with plenty of downward pressure. Like this it doesn’t change its programme but it becomes more performant. A non-technical skier won’t discover this quality because the Völkl Kanjo 84 requires such extreme angles.

So, we are split between an easy ski on soft snow and gentle slopes where it performs majestically. Its tip is good as well as its turn fluidity. It tolerates rear imbalances and doesn’t require a massive amount of presence. However as soon as we go onto a more difficult technical terrain you need the skills to deal with it.

The Völkl Kanjo 84 is quite pleasant smearing, skidding turns, with some angle and going in and out of turns. It has good grip so it can be described as a homogenous ski that is easy to control.

It provides a reasonable performance for an intermediate skier on a particular type of terrain. It’s more like an Alpine piste ski than one for exploring powder. On off piste with this width other models perform better – concerning its design, and ski tip design.

The design is a little geometric, quite classic. The ski’s construction finds Titanal but tapered down version, it keeps a bit of energy without being totally inert, which means the price tag is lower to have a retail price that is more accessible than other models.

The Völkl Kanjo 84 doesn’t really do what the skier decides. It becomes very technically difficult to exploit on choppy terrain at high speed. You need to eb able to handle dynamic angles and be very precise in your positioning and respond to the ski: this is not an intuitive ski.
