The Elan Speed Magic is a slalom-style ski. In long turns it has a tendency to turn a bit too enthusiastically, so it’s really designed for tight turns. It’s a top-of-the-range product for the piste. It is easy to trigger the turns and handle. In the second part of the turn, where we usually expect the greatest speed and the strongest pressure, the tip vibrates; especially if we push it on hard snow. But at a constant speed it is fine. It slips if you engage the pressure too much. It isn’t really an expert’s ski because it skis with ease without needing too much technical skill or physical aptitude.
It has a stunning asymmetric construction. We did of course inverse the skis to see what difference it made and noticed that the skis go straight ahead. You need more maintenance care for asymmetric skis, especially when sharpening the edges. The design could be improved for a ski that is in the top end of the range: it’s not punchy enough and has a cheap feeling. It’s a ski for a technical skier who doesn’t want to burn herself out.
