We had the opportunity to test the K2 Mindbender 120 Boa for almost two seasons as we received the pair very early in the winter of 2023. This review therefore reflects a long-term test.
Firstly, unlike the K2 Mindbender 120 LV, in which we had broken a buckle (and a screw at the ski/walk lever), this K2 Mindbender 120 Boa showed no signs of weakness or breakage. In this regard, the Boa system it incorporates has proven its durability after almost 300 days of skiing. Only the GripWalk sole has worn out, and it presents a rather unconvincing grip on slippery surfaces such as ice and ultra-hard snow, as the rubber is rather stiff.
Returning to the Boa closure system, which did not fail to impress the testers. Why? The main reason is the quality of the mid-foot wrap and the absence of pressure points compared to a buckle closure. This results in precision, support, and comfort. However, it’s important not to over-tighten the dial.
The closure is achieved by turning the H+i1 dial, with millimetric precision: precise, quick, and convenient. To loosen the K2 Mindbender 120 Boa, simply pull the dial. Putting the foot in is easy. The top buckles are easy to handle. The collar strap closes with a large metal buckle; we would have preferred a Velcro closure, which is easier and quicker to adjust.
The ski/walk lever is quite effective. The range of motion on the ascent is adequate for engaging in freerando without tackling thousands of meters. In walk mode, the K2 Mindbender 120 Boa is comfortable for everyday use. One of the downsides of this K2 Mindbender 120 Boa is its high noise level when walking: slight squeaks, shell noises…
In action, the transmission of pressure is effective, and the 120 flex is genuine. The shell is somewhat sensitive to temperatures; it becomes stiffer in extremely cold conditions. The flex’s stiffness point arrives progressively, and it is well-balanced. The fit provides a mix of precision and comfort. The liner is relatively thick (pay attention to the ankles depending on your morphology) and relatively warm. It does not degrade over time. Like many ski boots, the K2 Mindbender 120 Boa retains moisture, so the liner should be removed after each outing.
A versatile boot that plays an interesting role in both freerando and on-piste skiing. It ensures good pressure transmission without sacrificing comfort. The Boa system is well integrated, providing precise and powerful closure. Very stylish appearance.
