Like all these types of skis derived from race service models, especially those with giant slalom geometry, it’s easy to be intimidated by them. The Salomon S/Race GS Pro is no exception.
It accelerates rapidly, and it requires a clear, well-groomed slope. It picks up speed quickly, and you need to have the skill to control the horsepower under the hood. Even though these skis are designed to be more “user-friendly,” when you’re on the edge at 70 km/h, the slightest mistake can become a major issue. You need to have the ability to engage the ski’s edge properly. This isn’t easy because both the tip and tail of the ski have a significant edge. The weight of the ski is another factor to consider. With the Salomon S/Race GS Pro, you’re not locked into the turn, but exiting the turn requires technical skills, physical strength, and agility. It’s more about precise piloting than casual skiing.
In terms of skiability, the Salomon S/Race GS Pro reminds us of the Fischer RC4, which really impressed us. This ski is fast, with a flex that allows for some variation in the turn radius, but it’s not an extreme flex. Even a skier weighing 70 kg can work the ski effectively.
It’s a real pleasure to carve with. The tip is quiet, stable, and well-shaped. You can feel the ski’s solid construction—it’s built for experienced, athletic skiers who know how to handle and push it.
If you’re not looking to go fast, the Salomon S/Race GS Pro becomes less enjoyable. The ski is long, and the edge can feel a bit grabby.
Great glide.
A very good ski, but best suited for giant slalom-type turns and a specific type of skier. It’s not an extreme ski. Award Core.
