SpeedlandGL : SVT

The brand-new Speedland GL: SVT is original in many ways. It’s a real pleasure to test a brand that explores and dares to make bold technical choices. Although the Oregon-based brand also offers road shoes, we had the chance to test a trail model.

What makes it original? In no particular order: it features a removable carbon plate, it has two Boa dials for tightening, and it provides (very) little protection.

For the testing enthusiasts that we are, the removable carbon plate of the Speedland GL: SVT is a joy! We approached this similarly to how we tested the asymmetrical Elan skis: to appreciate the technical relevance of this choice, we swapped the left and right ski to see the difference in performance… The same goes for the Speedland GL: SVT: simply run with one shoe that has the carbon plate and the other without. It’s very insightful. First observation, a runner who isn’t particularly sensitive to their sensations might not notice the difference. Second observation, an experienced runner will still notice a more responsive shoe with the carbon, more stable, and less sensitive to ground feedback (better foot protection). The weight difference is not noticeable at all.

The carbon plate is easily attached under the midsole, without tools or glue. It can be removed at the end of the shoe’s life to facilitate recycling, which is not the case for shoes with integrated carbon. The Speedland GL: SVT also allows you to run with or without the carbon plate, in case you want a softer ride for a more relaxed run.

Another unique feature is the two Boa Li2 dials, which, it should be noted, allow for tightening and loosening by simply turning in one direction or the other. There’s no need to pull (disconnect) the dial to adjust the fit by loosening the shoe. Very practical and precise. Once again, it’s worth mentioning that we tend to over-tighten with the very powerful Boa system, so it’s important to go gently to avoid pressure points. While the foot fit is very precise, the structure of the Speedland GL: SVT is quite flexible. Don’t expect a lot of support; the brand’s philosophy is clear: let the foot move naturally and promote proprioception.

There’s very little protection in the forefoot, with a very thin toe bumper, as well as on the sides and heel. The lightness of the materials contrasts with the highly aggressive and efficient Michelin sole. We limited the use of the Speedland GL: SVT to less technical terrain, with minimal slopes. It’s also very effective for fast hiking.

With a 5mm drop (28mm in the forefoot and 33mm in the heel), it’s within the typical range for this type of product. Lateral stability is excellent, the push-off is decent for a relatively low shoe, and it doesn’t drag during the stride, even providing a bit of energy return. The foam used is very similar to that found in road shoes from brands like Asics or 361°. Long distances are definitely possible with the Speedland GL: SVT. The weight was considered “light.”

The price remains the only concern: as we understand it, $299 plus $35 for the carbon plate…

An original shoe featuring removable carbon plates, double Boa Li2 tightening, and a highly aggressive Michelin sole. Very little, if any, support.
