We tested the Kästle MX84 in the 176 cm length. We had been eagerly waiting to carve turns with this beautiful, powerful ski — and it did not disappoint.
The pronounced tip rise clearly positions it, as Kästle claims, in the All-Mountain category. That said, let’s not beat around the bush — the Kästle MX84 absolutely excels on-piste! This is a ski with superb edge hold and a long effective edge. It feels planted and solid underfoot, allowing for high-speed skiing with a real sense of power. It’s on the heavier side, which adds to that feeling of stability and strength.
This ski is exceptionally well made — nothing is left to chance. Every detail is carefully designed and finished. Integrated tip protection, no protruding screws or awkward details that you sometimes find on other brands. The craftsmanship is outstanding. There’s even a small badge celebrating 100 years of Kästle skis, a beautifully finished aluminum tail, and excellent glide… This is serious gear, no question about it.
Its biggest strength? There are many, but if we had to highlight just one, it would be its stability. You can really let the MX84 run on big, sweeping turns, holding a clean edge effortlessly — and the edge grip is simply phenomenal. This is a powerful machine. The Kästle MX84 pushes the speedometer without breaking a sweat. And yet, it remains composed: you feel totally in control, the ski never wobbles, never vibrates at the tip. Despite all its power, it’s not overpowering. Yes, there’s a bit of weight underfoot, but even with its testosterone-fueled character, the MX84 remains manageable. It pivots easily when flat, handles skidded turns well, and transitions seamlessly from edge to edge. You can start a drifted turn and shift right into a clean carve — or vice versa.
When getting to know the MX84, you’ll want to keep an eye on the energetic tail. It’s definitely present. As soon as you pressure the tail, it bites into the ice and carves aggressively. If you learn to manage this response, you’re rewarded with an exceptional ski. However, smaller or less technically proficient skiers might find it a bit much. Choosing the right length is essential.
The flex is well-tuned — strong yet predictable — and perfectly aligned with the MX84’s powerful personality. Still, it’s easy to manage, progressive, with no abrupt zones. You always feel in control thanks to the smooth flex pattern. It’s a dream for medium to long turns, whether you’re going fast or at a more relaxed pace. When you dip below its 16.3 m radius, especially in steep terrain, if you push the MX84 too hard, it demands skill — and ideally, a solid build — to get the most out of it. But within its designed turning radius, the MX84 is unstoppable.
On harder snow or small crusty chunks, the MX84 produces a distinctive sound from the tip. Not annoying — quite the opposite. It sounds like quality. No hollow or cheap vibrations here.
Excellent torsional rigidity makes it super effective in steep and icy conditions. Edge grip is outstanding. A ski that feels majestic, powerful. Perfectly tuned flex. Magical. No hesitation — First Award by TEST4OUTSIDE!
