We previously tested the Rudy Project Astral model, a pair of sunglasses that won a Test4outside award. The only downside we noted about this well-designed pair was its size – we found the frame a bit too small for larger faces or for cycling, for example: a few drafts of air could be felt on the face.
With the Rudy Project Astral X, you get a wider and taller lens: 60×150 mm instead of 55×147 mm. The fit on the nose is still as comfortable, and the lightness is one of the key advantages of the Rudy Project Astral X: it weighs 28 grams on our scale.
The optical qualities of the Astral are retained, with good protection and an appropriate response in varying light conditions. We appreciated the absence of a frame around the periphery, allowing any sweat to slide off without being trapped. It’s worth noting that this Rudy Project Astral X is originally designed for performance/endurance sports: road cycling, gravel biking, running, trail running, triathlon, cross-country skiing/biathlon, and certain beach sports like volleyball and canoeing.
One drawback could be the lack of a hard case, but the price of the Rudy Project Astral X is relatively lower compared to some competing products. It comes with a fabric case instead. Like the Astral model, the X version also allows for the use of prescription lens inserts.
Very light, stylish, equipped with a wide and protective lens, this pair of sunglasses excels in all endurance/performance sports. Awarded First Test4outside.com.
