We tested the Gore Wear Explore top with the Gore Wear Storm shorts, an outfit designed in the same vein: for gravel riding, and multi-day excursions.
The Gore Wear Explore has 47% Merinos wool to limit bad smells developing (it’s not always easy to wash your kit on long journeys). The other bonus point with Merinos is that it stays warm when wet. The polyester dries more quickly and contributes to evacuating sweat quickly.
You immediately feel the Merinos’ presence against the skin and remains quite warm despite what Gore Wear states. With the fabric mix you have thermal protection during and after physical effort, breathability and fast drying. We also really liked the fact that it doesn’t smell.
The Gore Wear Explore’s other major bonus is its comfort due to its design, cut and fabric. We love the sleeves that come low down, almost to your elbows (good sun protection) and how soft they feel in this area. The Gore Wear Explore also descends over the lumber region giving you excellent protection. There’s a little zipped pocket at the back on the right that doesn’t get in the way.
The collar is not the usual cyclist’s style: it is rounded with press studs. This look means you could wear the Gore Wear Explore in town or after cycling. This top is also recommended for hiking.
The Gore Wear Explore is a very good top for gravel riding or for multi-day excursions. Cut, thermal regulation, drying, and odour management, it amasses plenty of good points. We gave it the Test4outside.com FIRST Award.
