The Kathmandu Trailhead Novaloft jacket is an intermediate product, sitting between a protective outer shell and an insulating layer. It features synthetic “Novaloft” insulation and a two-layer construction designed to shield from rain.
While the Kathmandu Trailhead Novaloft is indeed water-repellent and can withstand light rain for a while, its limitations become apparent when compared to a fully dedicated rain jacket. That said, it’s a very good option for use in light, intermittent showers and humid conditions. In heavy rain, it’s clearly less effective (notably due to the absence of waterproof zippers).
If we were to rate its waterproofing vs. insulation balance, we’d estimate it at around 40/60.
In terms of insulation, the jacket is both comfortable and efficient — it clearly retains body heat. Unlike down jackets with stitched compartments that can create cold spots, this synthetic insulation has no thermal bridging. The Novaloft material is barely affected by moisture and the jacket dries quickly.
Another strong point is the warmth-to-weight ratio. You get nearly the same thermal performance as a thick down jacket, with only 575 grams in your pack.
The hood is also insulated and very warm. It can be adjusted quickly with a single toggle located at the back of the head.
The fabric feels great to wear, following movement in all three axes. The hem can be adjusted at two points.
The collar height is well-designed and offers effective protection.
All in all, this is an excellent, highly versatile jacket that can handle bad weather — and even rain — in the absence of a dedicated waterproof shell. It provides solid insulation at a reasonable price. We’ve awarded it a Hot Deal award for its great value for money.
