The Fox Union lineup includes three models, one of which—the Fox Union Boa—comes fully equipped with dual BOA® Li2 dials. This model eliminates the traditional midfoot strap, instead adopting a closure system that has already proven its worth in snowboarding, cycling, ski touring, trail running, and now, mountain biking.
As the premium version in the range, the Fox Union Boa is designed for clipless pedals. It’s a relatively lightweight shoe that still maintains walkability: your foot rolls naturally rather than being restricted by an overly stiff sole. Right from the first ride, this shoe strikes an excellent balance between comfort, pedaling efficiency, and control.
That said, we did notice a bit of front-end inertia around the toes, likely due to the reinforced toe box designed for impact protection—useful when the trail gets rowdy.
Fit and closure are standout features. The BOA® Li2 system offers lightning-fast, highly precise adjustment. It’s extremely convenient to fine-tune the fit on the fly—tightening or loosening the shoe while riding—without fully releasing the system. That’s a unique advantage of the Li2 dials.
A word of caution: the BOA® system is powerful—avoid overtightening, as it could create pressure points.
Once dialed in, the foot feels securely locked in, close to the sole, maximizing bike handling and responsiveness. The ankle remains free to move naturally, which adds to overall comfort. The tongue, however, could benefit from being a bit softer at the top for even better comfort during longer rides.
The outsole provides solid grip across most surfaces, though it clogs up in heavy mud—a common issue among similar MTB shoes.
Cleaning is easy, and the overall build quality feels durable, promising good longevity.
In summary, the Fox Union Boa is an excellent choice for riders using clipless pedals. It delivers top-tier foot retention, on-the-go adjustability, and a solid blend of pedaling power and off-the-bike walkability. A strong, well-rounded performer for aggressive trail or enduro riding.
