Field Test – Black Diamond Sequence Pants
Designed for climbing but suited to much more, the Black Diamond Sequence proves to be a reliable and versatile option for a wide range of outdoor activities, from crag sessions to hikes and via ferrata. We took it through multiple environments to evaluate its performance in real-world conditions.
The pants stand out for their impressive lightness and comfort right out of the pack. The synthetic ripstop fabric, made with 50% recycled materials, feels soft on the skin and is highly breathable. The cut is clean and functional, and the pants move well with the body, thanks to a subtle stretch and a durable water-repellent finish (DWR).
Despite their lightweight feel, we found no weakness in terms of durability. After weeks of rock contact, scrambling, and repeated use, the Sequence pants held up exceptionally well, with no visible signs of wear or abrasion.
The Regular Fit offers a straight leg and a relatively classic silhouette. The waistband is elasticated and lined, with an integrated drawcord for adjustment. It stays securely in place even during high steps, heel hooks, or long approaches. However, climbers used to full-length coverage might notice that the legs ride up slightly under a harness or while moving, which could leave ankles more exposed than usual.
In terms of comfort, the Sequence compares favorably to softshells or lightweight trekking pants. It follows movement naturally, doesn’t bunch up under a harness, and performs well in warm to moderate temperatures. Moisture management is good, and while the fabric isn’t designed for cold conditions, it dries quickly after light rain or sweat.
There are two front hand pockets that are deep enough to store small gear or personal items, and they remain accessible with a harness on. A rear pocket with snap closure includes a dedicated brush loop, a thoughtful detail that climbers will appreciate.
The Black Diamond Sequence is an excellent all-rounder for climbers who want a pant that performs well on rock but transitions easily to trail or travel. Its balance of breathability, stretch, and durability makes it a strong candidate for multi-pitch routes, summer hikes, or daily cragging. While not intended for technical alpine missions or cold weather, it more than proves its worth in three-season conditions.
