Our team, made up of certified mountain guides and climbing instructors, put the Arc’teryx Serratus Pant through a rigorous four-month field test under intensive use. This hybrid technical pant, priced at €240, claims to bridge the gap between alpine performance and everyday practicality.
The Serratus Pant is built on a smart dual-fabric design. Fortius DW 2.0—composed of 88% recycled nylon and 12% elastane—reinforces high-impact zones such as the knees, seat, and lower legs. We’ll admit that upon first receiving the product, our team had some reservations about the fabric’s feel and appearance. However, after several months of intensive use, the pants have held up impressively across all our field outings. This material resists repeated abrasion against rock surfaces extremely well.
The second fabric, Aequora AirPerm (86% nylon, 14% elastane), is strategically placed in high-perspiration areas to enhance moisture wicking. This intelligent combination gives the Serratus Pant its excellent breathability.
Weighing 345 grams in size 32, this men’s model features a PFAS-free water-repellent treatment and includes three strategically positioned zippered pockets that remain accessible when wearing a harness.
In real-world testing, the Serratus Pant revealed undeniable strengths. In alpine climbing, the articulated cut allows for full technical movement without restrictive tension. Opposing moves, delicate mantles, and long reaches feel natural and unhindered.
In hiking scenarios, the pant shows remarkable versatility. During approaches to climbing routes and technical high-mountain treks, it excels in adaptability. Steep ascents with significant elevation gain do not restrict joint movement, while its resistance to branches and rocks off-trail proves excellent. Breathability remains top-notch even on multi-hour outings, avoiding the discomfort of overheating.
Ventilation performs especially well during sustained approaches and long climbs. Unlike some softshell pants that turn into saunas, the Serratus Pant maintains a manageable microclimate even during prolonged efforts. Post-activity drying is also quick.
Aesthetically, the Serratus Pant avoids the pitfall of an overtly “technical” look. Its clean silhouette allows for a seamless transition from outdoor activity to casual everyday wear.
Despite its strengths, the Serratus Pant has a few drawbacks. The ankle adjustment system lacks robustness in high alpine wind conditions. The absence of side zips makes it tricky to put on over bulky technical footwear. Our testers also noted an issue with the snap closure: while it fastens easily, opening it requires a specific technique—hence the small instruction sheet included by the manufacturer.
Thermal insulation is moderate, requiring proper base layers in cold conditions. A discreet additional pocket would improve practicality. Lastly, the high price point may be a barrier for some users, although the build quality justifies the investment over time.
The Arc’teryx Serratus Pant lives up to its promise as a versatile technical pant. It meets the expectations of mountain professionals while maintaining everyday practicality. With excellent freedom of movement, durability, and understated styling, it’s a solid choice for those seeking high-performance and long-lasting gear.
