The North Face Summit Verbier GTX Jkt is a “true” freeride ski jacket in the sense that it’s a solid, fully functional product built specifically for this type of activity. You can feel that nothing was left to chance. It can be used for short ski touring missions, but its weight and the relative stiffness of the fabric aren’t ideal for longer climbs. For freeride skiing, however, it’s perfect.
Its three-layer Gore-Tex fabric stands up very well to tree runs, friction, and abrasion. The protection offered by the North Face Summit Verbier GTX Jkt is extremely effective, especially in terms of waterproofing. All the panel assemblies are executed with great care, clearly aiming for a premium product — which also explains its high price.
The collar comes up very high, offering excellent protection for the lower part of the face. The hood achieves a good balance between protection and lateral visibility, and fits easily over a helmet.
We really liked the numerous, very large pockets that let you stash everything you need and even warm your hands — something increasingly rare on protective shells, which most of the time only feature chest pockets. The two hand pockets have a flap but no waterproof zips.
The two-way main zipper on the North Face Summit Verbier GTX Jkt runs extremely smoothly. You can operate it with one hand all the way up!
The wrist area is exemplary: super-wide, strong Velcros, ergonomically cut sleeves, and above all, very roomy cuffs that easily fit over bulky gloves.
We really appreciated this tough freeride ski jacket — highly relevant in terms of technical performance: 100% functional and stylish. A top-of-the-line piece that earns a First Test4outside award.
