The Atomic Redster Q7 is an “evolution / progressive” ski. We had asked for a ski that makes life easier for intermediate or non-expert skiers. The Atomic Redster Q7 is supposed to offer ease of use and, above all, quick and privileged access to carved turns. It is indeed an effective ski in that regard; it gives you the tools to engage the edge easily. This edge engagement is greatly facilitated by its wide tip, which pulls the ski into turns very quickly—provided you are already balanced and know how to position yourself on the ski (fore, aft, and with proper angulation).
With that prerequisite in mind, even though this is an “evolution-style” ski that isn’t overly demanding or high-strung, the Redster Q7 still caters to fairly technical, sporty skiers who will be able to lay down very impressive arcs on a ski that can push them quite far. The performance level of the Atomic Redster Q7 is surprisingly high. In terms of accessibility, anything involving flat-base sliding or pivoted turns is a breeze—no trouble at all.
The Atomic Redster Q7 is a very solid, predictable, and user-friendly ski that doesn’t feel heavy, whether on your feet or carried on your shoulder. However, when it comes to riding on edge, you need to be more present, a bit more precise in your technique, and control your pressure. In fact, its main issue—which isn’t really a flaw—is that as soon as you tip it onto edge, the Atomic Redster Q7 picks up speed very fast; this could also be considered a major strength. It’s a ski that accelerates and might overwhelm a cautious owner. For others, the Atomic Redster Q7 will be fantastic because it offers great turn-radius versatility. It is quite supple, especially in the forebody. So as soon as you drive the tip, boom—it hooks into the turn. You can tighten the entry by pressing a bit harder; it’s totally a la carte. Once on edge, you can vary the turn radius by moving onto the tail and playing with it. The sensation is really enjoyable. It feels like there is a hinge point right underfoot, with a very well-engineered flex pattern. Its torsional stiffness never catches you off guard. We thoroughly enjoyed its capabilities and the response it gives to the skier.
It is a very smooth ski. Its limit? Heavier skiers will certainly bend the forebody a bit too much. But in any case, the tail never locks up; the Atomic Redster Q7 isn’t a ski that understeers—it stays under control and faithful to your intent.
Edge grip is solid. Granted, our test model of the Atomic Redster Q7 was razor-sharp, but it undeniably enjoys great edge hold. It isn’t overly wide underfoot, so it truly carves. It feels reassuring. Naturally, at high speeds under heavier skiers, it flexes a bit too much and loses a touch of stability. But you really have to push it to get there. Overall, it sits perfectly in its category—you could call it an “Evolution Plus” ski, with an extra kick of speed. In a straight line, it holds its track remarkably well; it doesn’t drift or chatter, and the tip remains planted flat against the snow. It sits very nicely. One flaw:the metallic tip protectors tend to catch when you cross your ski tips. The topsheet is durable and holds up well; it shows a few marks on the rear edges, but nothing major.
The glide quality is good. We noted the small elastomer tail protector. Good overall perceived quality. At the back of the ski, there is a superb Q7 logo.
The Atomic Redster Q7 is a well-crafted ski, built with care. You find all of Atomic’s trademark know-how here:smoothness, a finely tuned flex, and crisp glide quality—definitely not a ski built in a rush or with compromised performance.
A true skier’s ski, made for those who want to progress on groomed trails, have fun, vary their turn radii, mix up drifted and carved turns, and deliver high performance. A terrific ski.
