The Vaude Monviso 3 is a protective jacket (there’s no insulation) which is designed for ski touring, mountaineering and could be used for freeriding, even if doesn’t have a snow skirt. It does have a ski-pass pocket.
It’s a lightweight three-layer jacket, we weighed it in at 500g for size M.
This Vaude Monviso 3’s three main advantages are its light weight, the stretch fabric married to a well-designed cut, and its breathability. In addition to the fabric being thin, it moves with you, providing real comfort whilst skiing. You also don’t feel like you’re being cooked in an oven like you do with some products. Of course, breathability depends on multiple factors (underlayers, type of effort, outside temperature, etc.) but in the case of the Vaude Monviso 3, the thermal amplitudes are really well managed. You can regulate it if it starts getting too hot there are underarm ventilation openings (with zips).
The design is quite close fitting, but you can still wear several thin layers underneath. We really loved the double zip at the collar, it’s not just a detail, it lets you change the collar volume, for example to free up space for movement or to add extra protective underlayers (polar fleece neckband for example). It’s also extremely practical when wearing a hooded down jacket and/or a helmet.
The Vaude Monviso 3’s collar is also unlike any other in terms of protection: it goes up high, remains flexible yet stays upright (it doesn’t sag), and is soft against the chin. The three-point adjustable hood is a classic design but very performant, we also appreciated the way it follows your head movements without obstruction.
All the Vaude Monviso 3 zips slide well and are all waterproof, (except for the one on the inside chest pocket).
The shaped cuffs are really well shaped and designed, we even have inner sealing sleeves with soft comfortable fabric. We would’ve liked slightly longer Velcro straps to go over big gloves.
Wearing a harness isn’t a problem, you can still easily access pockets.
We were able to test it in the snow but not the rain, and in ultra-wet snow. It didn’t show any signs of weakness (20,000 theoretical millimeters). You’d need to check it under a deluge. Ditto for its ability to withstand contact with rocks or ski edges (carrying skis on your shoulder).

This Vaude Monviso 3 is an excellent, very comfortable lightweight jacket. In wind conditions and in the snow, it provides excellent protection while respecting body movement. It is also very versatile; you can use it for many different disciplines. It is particularly recommended for ski touring.
