In our view, we find the core DNA of the Protest brand here: stylish products at an affordable price point. In fact, we have tested several products from the brand, many of which have often won awards for best value for money.
With this Protest Connor, you get both a protective shell and an insulated jacket—all for under 250 euros. Of course, at this price point, you can’t expect high-end 800-fill goose down insulation. Thermal insulation is conventionally provided by polyester padding. In the end, there’s no doubt about it: the jacket is warm, fully capable of handling sitting on a chairlift in the middle of January.
The Protest Connor is not compressible, nor is that expected from a jacket of this style compared to a purely packable down jacket. The membrane performs well across most weather conditions. Here again, given its price point, it cannot be compared to an ultra-technical jacket made with Gore-Tex Pro. But honestly, the Protest Connor handles the vast majority of mountain weather situations, and thanks to its style, it can even be worn around town.
The chest pocket zips and the main front zip are waterproof. However, the underarm ventilation zips and hand pocket zips are not. A fixed snow skirt is included, closing effectively with four snap buttons.
The collar area is particularly cozy, and Protest has incorporated a breathable mesh panel in front of the mouth to vent breath moisture outward when the collar is zipped up high. Overall protection is very good.
The fixed hood could be slightly more helmet-compatible, but it maintains excellent peripheral vision. Important details haven’t been overlooked: a goggle wipe, soft wrist gaiters with thumbholes, and a secure pass pocket.
The materials used stretch nicely with the skier’s movements, making it very comfortable to wear. The jacket is on the heavier side.
Build quality is neat and precise, with no visible loose threads, coarse stitching, or poorly aligned panels.
This protective insulated jacket earns our Best Value Award. You can still ski comfortably and effectively without breaking the bank, and Protest proves it once again.
