The Osprey Soelden 22 is a great blend of carrying comfort, durability, lightness (weighing 1050 grams), and practicality. In addition, you get Osprey’s quality craftsmanship in terms of stitching, accessories (straps, zippers). It’s a well-designed bag, although it lacks a system to secure the excess waist belt (on both sides). Aside from this detail, the 22 liters of the Osprey Soelden are perfect for a day hike, allowing you to carry your skins, race food, protective layers, and especially safety equipment.
The safety equipment is stored in a dedicated compartment, accessible via a zipper on top of the bag. Unfortunately, the clip on the strap for carrying skis needs to be undone to access this space. When you need to quickly grab your shovel and probe, time is critical. Anyway, as with all bags of this type, carrying skis in a triangle configuration is not recommended as it takes too long to set up and creates too much swinging. The problem with the strap crossing over the safety compartment zipper is partly solved with diagonal carrying.
The back of the Osprey Soelden 22 opens wide to give full access to all your gear. The foam on the back is comfortable and sturdy. It follows the skier’s movements.
A top zippered pocket allows you to store valuables or fragile items (another zippered pocket inside the bag). All zippers are equipped with easy-to-grip pulls, even when wearing gloves.
Carrying skis or a snowboard with a 22-liter bag is more of a temporary solution. If you have heavy and wide skis, it’s not ideal.
The helmet carry net deploys very easily.
A very good freeride bag: sturdy, with comfortable and efficient carrying, and carefully made.
Available in 32 liters.
