Blizzard Firebird Race Type MT

CORE

Dressed in its purple livery, the Blizzard Firebird Race Type MT displays a slalom-inspired character tailored for slightly more drawn-out turns. It’s a handsome, remarkably versatile ski on the groomed trails thanks to an interesting turn radius that fits on-piste riding very well. You don’t have to ski full speed, slaloming aggressively between other skiers; you can drift, skid, or slide it, then catch the edge late in the turn to finish the arc. You don’t need to be locked on edge all the time.

When choosing the carving option, even though the Blizzard Firebird Race Type MT accelerates quickly and hooks into turns in a flash, you can tighten the radius, close the arc, and slow down—or, on the contrary, ramp up the speed and open up the curve. It’s not an overly nervous or excessively heavy ski underfoot; while it certainly has substance, is built to charge fast, and is designed to hold extreme angles, it remains relatively accessible and very enjoyable for daily use. That said, it targets expert skiers who want to go fast and demand rock-solid edge hold on very hard snow. On ice, it’s a pure treat: it doesn’t budge and simply slices through the snow. It is a somewhat heavy, high-performance ski that can become tiring over time if you lack both the technical background and the physical stamina. You need to stay properly positioned on it, particularly over the tail. The rear has plenty of pop, but it isn’t overly dominant.

The Blizzard Firebird Race Type MT maintains good fluidity, though you can feel the firmness underfoot, especially around the heel of the boot. Our test model came mounted with a plate-binding system, which larger or heavier skiers will certainly appreciate.

We debated whether this ski deserved a Test4outside Core Award—it is a demanding ski, but it’s right there, present, and ultimately quite rewarding. It makes you want to ski hard and push it. It features a beautiful, very rounded tip on the front. At high speeds, the tip doesn’t chatter at all, and the ski stays glued to the snow. You get an almost race-ski feel without the usual drawbacks. This is very interesting because you can quickly put the ski flat; it won’t pull you into “kamikaze” carved turns where you’re never sure how things will end. As long as you have a bit of technique, you remain completely in control.

In terms of construction, it’s traditional, razor-sharp craftsmanship with a race-bred feel, featuring a subtle Blizzard insert behind the binding. The graphics border on austere, as the Blizzard Firebird Race Type MT belongs to that category of skis that prioritizes raw efficiency over flashy cosmetics. It boasts very good glide and exceptional edge hold.

In moguls, between the firm, rigid tail and the very planted tip that can slap against bump faces, you’ll need to stay alert. However, direct high-speed lines are handled with ease, as are large-radius turns—even if that isn’t strictly its intended program.

A very well-crafted, high-performing ski. Extremely grippy and powerful without being overly dominant. A total delight on piste. Test4outside Core Award.
