Tested in the 185 cm length with a 20-meter turn radius, the Kästle Transcend 114 comes across on paper as a hardcore freeride “gun”—an exclusive machine we expected to be stiff, ultra-demanding, and reserved for iron thighs. And yet, the surprise was total. Aside from very hard snow where the leverage of its generous waist reveals its true heft, this big fat ski proves to be as high-performing as it is accessible.
On the snow, particularly in powder and crud, it is absolute bliss. Lightweight underfoot and equipped with exceptional dampening, it transmits no harsh shocks. Its famous lightweight Kästle tip (not hollowed out) works wonders: it chatters to better absorb the terrain, allowing you to punch through bumps and charge through snow piles without batting an eye.The ski flattens everything in its path, relying on a very progressive edge-to-edge transition that gives it a surprisingly easy pivot. In the rear, the profile features a subtle, discreet tail rise, but this modesty takes nothing away from a bewildering maneuverability that greatly simplifies pivoting in trees or tight spaces.
Contrary to conventional wisdom regarding skis of this width, the Transcend 114 does not lock you forcefully into its 20-meter radius when carving. Thanks to a finely tuned flex and suppleness, the Kästle Transcend 114 accepts variable turn shapes on demand: you can lengthen them, tighten them, carve, or skid in an instant. At high speeds, its royal stability delivers an overwhelming sense of total confidence.
On the finishing front, you find the signature Kästle touch: a rugged topsheet, impeccable construction with a continuous full wrap edge, and a tail profile that slides effortlessly into gondola ski racks despite the width. Only the glide performance proved perfectible during our test.
One of the finest surprises in the freeride category. Far from being an exclusive monster, this Transcend 114 combines the efficiency of an expert model (capable of charging at full throttle with a very strong skier) with a surprising accessibility that can instill confidence in less experienced skiers off-piste.
