We really loved the Altra Experience Wild 3+ — efficient and extremely enjoyable to run in, in more ways than one.
It may seem like a small detail, but the pleasure of slipping into this very good-looking Altra starts with the ultra-practical heel strap, cleverly designed: a folded strap that turns into a loop, perfect for sliding a finger through and pulling the heel on without effort or fuss. It’s simple, lightweight, attractive, and well thought out. The test gets off to a great start — like sitting in a sports sedan and hearing the solid, muted thud of the door closing, a clear sign of premium quality. A promise of excellent sensations to come.
Altra has succeeded in delivering a very modern trail running shoe without betraying its DNA: zero drop and a very wide forefoot, delivering outstanding comfort. Where some previous Altra models required more engagement — pushing them through the stride, working them on the forefoot — the Altra Experience Wild 3+ features an energized midsole. It performs well on the forefoot, but can also be run from the heel, as the rebound and energy return help propel the stride forward. The geometry of the sole, enhanced by a forefoot rocker, promotes smooth transitions and almost makes you forget the zero drop. That said, it’s worth repeating: this type of shoe requires gradual adaptation to avoid calf injuries associated with zero-drop designs.
The Vibram outsole features a very interesting cut that provides excellent torsional management in the Altra Experience Wild 3+. There are nearly decoupled zones that nevertheless work together. To explain: you get precise ground feel under the forefoot and great flexibility to adapt to the terrain, while the heel offers solid stability. The Altra Experience Wild 3+ has been described as “agile,” which ultimately suits it well despite its width. It also feels fairly lightweight on foot.
The Vibram Megagrip outsole is excellent — thanks to the quality of the rubber compound, of course, but also to that articulated design: there are no longer flat or rigid zones under the sole that could compromise traction.
The build quality is very good. Only the laces might feel slightly below the otherwise high overall standard.
An outstanding zero-drop trail running shoe that remains comfortable, well-cushioned, and equipped with impressive grip. We awarded it the Core Test4outside Award.
