In the past, we’ve tested the Altra Lone Peak multiple times. Here’s the 9+ version equipped with a Vibram Megagrip sole. This shoe already had excellent grip thanks to its large and numerous lugs. Now, the Altra Lone Peak 9+ is even more reliable on slippery slabs, rocky ridges, and other technical and delicate areas to handle.
Overall, there is no revolution compared to previous models; you get better foot placement stability while maintaining great comfort. Indeed, the Altra Lone Peak 9+ stays true to the brand’s DNA with a super comfortable toe box that provides plenty of space at the front of the foot.
Another feature we like is the zero drop. While brands are increasingly moving toward oversized designs, it’s good to remember the benefits of zero drop. As an addition to other shoes, or if you’re a runner accustomed to zero drop, the Altra Lone Peak 9+ helps improve foot placement, proprioception, and strengthens the muscular and tendinous chain of the foot. Of course, it’s important to gradually adapt to avoid injury.
With the Altra Lone Peak 9+, you get a very grippy, (very) low-to-the-ground, flexible shoe. It’s a great tool that provides interesting sensations and lets you really feel the terrain. As for running an ultra trail with it…
Zero drop doesn’t mean “lack of cushioning.” The signature cushioning of the brand is present in the Altra Lone Peak 9+, well-balanced between the front and rear foot. The ankle area is minimally supported, which is intentional by the brand. The effect is compensated by a very clear, reassuring ground feel. There’s no soft or bouncy effect like some oversized shoes.
An excellent shoe for fast hiking as well.
The construction is very well done, with no excess glue, no visible seams, and solid materials.
