It is difficult to draw any firm conclusions about the benefits of a powder such as ON Optimum Nutrition Clear Protein, as muscle hypertrophy typically takes around six to eight weeks to become noticeable, alongside targeted training. That said, this whey protein is not specifically designed for weight gain. Other products in the Optimum Nutrition range are significantly higher in protein, carbohydrates, and calories.
ON Optimum Nutrition Clear Protein should therefore be viewed more as a sports drink, with a protein contribution, of course, but in relatively “limited” amounts compared with powders specifically designed to support muscle hypertrophy. ON Optimum Nutrition Clear Protein provides 20 grams of whey protein and 82 kcal per serving.
Two scoops of powder should be mixed with 400 ml of water. Adding it to regular or plant-based milk would undermine some of the product’s main advantages: good digestibility and a light, refreshing drink with a non-creamy texture. Although the powder is still made from whey, ON Optimum Nutrition Clear Protein contains very little lactose.
We tested ON Optimum Nutrition Clear Protein in the Mango/Passion Fruit flavor. The first few sips are appealing, but the aroma and flavor quickly become rather overpowering. The artificial flavor is too pronounced. There is then a certain acidity, although the drink remains sweet due to the addition of a sweetener—a shame if you are looking for a more natural taste. It is also available in Blackcurrant flavor.
The protein content is lower than that of a “classic” whey protein, but its refreshing character makes it easy to drink after a workout or on hot days.
