The ninth-generation Altra Torin features several updates, including a new Vibram XS Dura outsole designed to provide greater durability and improved grip. The heel shape has also been revised, along with the tongue and mesh upper.
Make no mistake: the Altra Torin 9 has a zero drop and virtually no rocker, so it requires a forefoot-oriented running style and runners who are comfortable with this type of stride. We even see the Altra Torin 9 as an excellent training tool for improving running form through forefoot-focused drills and sessions. In this respect, you quickly find a firmer point under the heel, while the cushioning feels more evenly distributed and linear beneath the metatarsals. This ninth version remains true to the Torin family, although the improvements are noticeable.
This is not a pure performance shoe, but rather a highly enjoyable and comfortable model, thanks in large part to its generous toe box. The toes are particularly well catered for. Of course, this king-size amount of space may take some getting used to for runners who prefer a more secure, close-fitting feel around the foot. We weighed our pair at 255 grams in a size 42.5, and the Altra Torin 9 virtually disappears underfoot once you get into your stride.
The rest of the foot is well secured. Depending on your foot shape, you may find yourself wanting an even snugger fit around the heel. The lacing system provides effective lockdown. The overall finish is excellent, with impressive 3D detailing.
We particularly enjoyed the stability of the Altra Torin 9. Its broad platform works extremely well, while the flat foot strike and lack of lateral roll provide a reassuring feeling of stability.
An unconventional zero-drop road running shoe. A great opportunity to gradually improve your running form, with outstanding stability and king-size comfort around the toes. However, it requires a “proper” running technique if you want to get the most performance out of it.
