Asics Gel-Fuji Trabuco – Version 7 promised to be the One. Well, they are almost there but they still lack some adjustments and details to reach the top.
As soon as we put them on the first thing we noticed was their weight: 335g in size 42.5, not very light. Even if they are designed for tough terrain and ultras, we were slightly surprised by some of the materials they used, and techniques: seams, double seams, material thickness, multiple and diverse reinforcements, hefty stone guards. There are ways here they could have the same qualities with less weight; using thermo-collages, thinner materials to envelop the feet. In the end you wonder if these would last longer than a lighter shoe? That would need long-term testing.
We found that the Asics Gel-Fuji Trabuco 7 were very comfortable in most areas of the foot because the foam padding is well spread. The ankle and heel areas have been particularly well-designed, very comfortable, (ultra-protected). Only the area around the toes are a little less cozy because you can feel the rather stiff stone guard.
Putting them on is easy and made even easier thanks to the little loop at the back of the heel.
The lacing is efficient and composed of two zones. The first, at the front of the foot has two eyelets so you need to adjust it with your fingers as the laces don’t slide easily here – but in general they don’t need that much adjustment so far forward, as the shoe envelopment is so good.
The second zone has four small loops in which the laces slide and allow you to precisely adjust the tension. The excess laces are stored in a small pocket on the tongue. It lacks an elastic on the bank of the pouch to facilitate the storage of the lace and keep it inside. To keep the laces tight you must do a double knot.
These Asics Gel-Fuji Trabuco 7 are very comfortable and give you the impression of having invincible shoes. Very strong, they also have their own “Asics” sole with a very powerful grip, right up to the tip of the foot and the sole does not saturate with mud. It is an all-terrain and all conditions model.
The cushioning is well-diffused under the forefoot while it is more noticeable at the heel. They are quite stiff. A lot of torsional stiffness, even longitudinally. Running fore-foot, the Asics enables you to accelerate. On downhill runs, the Asics Gel-Fuji Trabuco 7 filters the lumpy ground and you never expose yourself to sharp stones. Again, the sole’s grip is good.
Its 8mm drop is consistent with its description of usage. Your calves are protected. We appreciated the stability and the presence of the sole, the overall foot envelopment (especially at the front) gives a solid, safe, and precise foot strike.
These shoes are designed for difficult paths and long distances. They protect and support the foot well in the action. The only downside is their weight.
