In the past, we probably underestimated the Novablast series. With version 6, we’ve rediscovered a highly versatile shoe that’s exceptionally comfortable for long runs and delivers impressive performance, without trying to be a full-on racing shoe.
The first thing you notice is the immediate step-in comfort. The cushioning, the soft materials, and the secure yet unobtrusive fit all contribute to making the shoe feel great from the very first strides. The ASICS Novablast 6 is the kind of shoe that appeals to a wide range of runners because it adapts well to many different types of runs. It even handles tempo sessions with ease, thanks to its smooth ride and excellent energy return. Although it has a relaxed personality, the Novablast 6 is surprisingly responsive, while remaining firmly in the daily trainer category rather than the racing segment.
The stack height is undoubtedly close to the upper limit of what’s currently possible. The oversized dimensions are striking, with a stack of 33.5 mm in the forefoot and 41.5 mm in the heel, resulting in an 8 mm drop. Yet despite its bulky appearance, the Novablast 6 feels well balanced on the run and transitions smoothly through each stride.
The cushioning deserves special mention. Impact protection is excellent, with a plush, soft feel under both the metatarsals and the heel. ASICS has clearly prioritized shock absorption while still delivering impressive energy return for a shoe without a plate, although it doesn’t quite reach the level of the ASICS Megablast. The midsole uses a derivative of the foam found in ASICS’ racing models, called FlyteFoam Turbo 2. The firmer phase of the cushioning comes relatively late in the gait cycle, reinforcing the overall emphasis on comfort.
The upper has also been updated. The engineered mesh performs very well, offering enough breathability for warm conditions without feeling overly ventilated during colder runs. The tongue is exemplary, staying perfectly in place throughout the run. The lacing system also scores highly, providing a precise and easily adjustable fit. Overall build quality is excellent. Our sample weighed 250 grams in a US men’s size 9 / EU 42.5.
As for grip, ASICS has introduced a thin rubber outsole designed to improve traction. We weren’t able to test it extensively across a wide variety of surfaces, so its performance in all conditions remains to be confirmed. The rubber is thin and flexible, and its long-term durability will also need to be assessed.
The Novablast 6 is an extremely accessible shoe for everyday training and long-distance running. It’s an excellent choice for runners looking for generous cushioning without sacrificing too much responsiveness. Comfortable, versatile, and capable across a remarkably broad range of situations, it’s easy to see why the Novablast remains a best-seller.
