Surprise! While most brands tend to make only minor yearly updates to their flagship models, carefully preserving their DNA, ASICS has clearly taken into account feedback on the previous Trabuco 13, and in our opinion has significantly improved its dynamic performance.
The trail running market is also moving toward more cushioned shoes, and this ASICS Trabuco 14 almost represents a break from the previous version. Indeed, despite an outward appearance that is nearly identical to the Trabuco 13, the midsole of the 14 is radically different. Where the Trabuco 13 felt firm and almost “harsh,” the Trabuco 14 delivers excellent cushioning and refined shock absorption that does not compromise foot strike or stability. This ASICS Trabuco 14 feels stable underfoot.
Despite an “oversized” shoe design, the Trabuco 14 does not position the runner’s foot excessively high off the ground. It provides very good ground feel while helping to avoid potential ankle twists. The drop is 8 mm, with 32 mm in the forefoot and 40 mm at the heel.
We also really appreciated the grip of the ASICS Trabuco 14, which impressed us on a wide variety of surfaces. The rubber compound remains highly effective even as temperatures drop. Long-term durability of this very convincing outsole will still need to be verified.
Given the dynamic qualities of the midsole, we initially considered awarding this ASICS Trabuco 14 an award. However, the generous forefoot volume and heel hold — which could be improved — ultimately counted against it. While transitions and the forward roll of the foot are smooth, we felt it still lacks a bit of efficiency in the running stride.
We really liked the quality of the padded tongue.
