Black Diamond delivers an excellent three-layer shell jacket with the Strataline Stretch Shell: lightweight, versatile, and highly functional.
The cut is very well designed, offering enough room for layering while remaining comfortable thanks to a fabric that naturally follows body movement.
We especially appreciated a detail that is far from insignificant: the base of the main zipper features a guiding system that makes fastening the zip extremely easy. This is particularly useful with cold fingers, and it virtually eliminates the risk of misaligning the zipper. We do not recall seeing this innovation on any other product. Chances are this feature will soon spread across many technical jackets.
The zippers themselves are well made and operate smoothly. However, contrary to what is stated on the Black Diamond website, they are not fully waterproof. They do delay moisture penetration effectively, but after prolonged exposure, water eventually gets through.
That said, the Black Diamond Strataline Stretch Shell remains a strong protective jacket overall, featuring excellent coverage around the neck area and a very well-designed hood. Peripheral vision remains unobstructed, and the adjustment system allows for a precise fit around the head. While the hood is compatible with a climbing helmet, it does not feel overly bulky during hiking use.
The jacket is lightweight, flexible, and offers good lower-back coverage. The wrist Velcro tabs are strong and secure, and the sleeves are roomy enough to accommodate a large GPS watch comfortably.
Combined with the essential underarm ventilation zips, the Black Diamond Strataline Stretch Shell provides solid breathability.
Overall, this is a lightweight and versatile three-layer protective shell. It also pairs exceptionally well with the Black Diamond Solution 2.0 Hoody insulation jacket.
