We discovered the new Brooks Hyperion Max 3, a road running model we hadn’t tried before. We didn’t expect such a lively training shoe, clearly built for tempo runs.
The new midsole features DNA Gold foam, an ultra-lightweight compound, paired with a nylon plate. This plate is a smart alternative to carbon—both in terms of performance and price. The combination works really well. The shoe is fast and delivers excellent energy return. What’s more, it doesn’t require a forefoot running style to get the most out of it.
The forward rocker is smooth and immediate. The Brooks Hyperion Max 3 has a 6 mm drop (37 mm at the forefoot and 45 mm at the heel), putting you quite high off the ground. That high stack—now common on this type of oversized shoe—is actually the reason it didn’t earn a Test4outside award: it compromises rollover control. In our opinion, lateral stability is slightly lacking.
That said, the shoe scores top marks for its light weight, responsiveness, and overall comfort. It’s not a racing shoe, of course, but it’s perfectly in line with its training-focused design.
We were especially impressed by the build quality and finish. Foot lockdown is excellent—almost like a compression sock. The slightly stretchy laces adapt well to the midfoot volume, and there’s a well-designed heel pull tab to make putting the shoe on easier. The padded tongue is also a great touch. Heel hold is excellent.
