The Columbia Skien Valley Hooded LS is an unusual jacket, mainly because it features a hood fitted with an integrated mosquito net. It also uses a fabric offering UPF 50 sun protection and an insect-repellent treatment.
The Columbia Skien Valley Hooded LS has a loose fit, with a fabric that follows the body’s movements for greater comfort. But, as you may have guessed, it is above all the mosquito net that attracts attention. The jacket features a hood extended by a mosquito net that can be pulled down over the face — or left folded away. This provides complete protection, whether you are on the move or relaxing at camp in the evening. Of course, visibility is somewhat reduced, but you quickly get used to it. The long sleeves also add an extra layer of protection, while the Columbia Skien Valley Hooded LS extends well below the hips for maximum coverage.
Columbia states that the jacket features Insect Shield technology, a long-lasting, odourless insect-repellent treatment. Is it really as durable and effective as claimed? We can only report that the Columbia Skien Valley Hooded LS provides an excellent barrier against mosquitoes.
Comfortable to wear and relatively breathable thanks to its lightweight, tightly woven fabric, the Columbia Skien Valley Hooded LS offers an excellent balance between protection and breathability for summer hiking.
The jacket has four pockets, two of which are secured with Velcro. Tough and resistant to abrasion, the Columbia Skien Valley Hooded LS is clearly designed for outdoor adventurers.
The only criticism concerns the inner seams, which are rather rough, and the somewhat inconsistent finishing.
