DHB choses to use a fiber from Alpha, the Alpha Direct that targets cold conditions. Modified, these fibers regulate the heat by avoiding its accumulation and in so doing reduces the presence of perspiration.
In use we discovered a lightweight vest with excellent weight/insulation ratio: at a weigh-in of 147g size M. We immediately noticed the Polartec Alpha Direct vest’s lining, except around the underarms and neck. We also noticed how soft this thick but airy material is.
It is very comfortable to wear (it’s very slightly stretchy), and you immediately feel the thermal insulation. It is enough to cope with severe cold under a windbreak, or worn alone on top of a bike jersey. In the latter, the chest is protected from the wind and it also has a water repellent effect.
The DHB Aeron Polartec Alpha Direct’s major advantage is its ability to delay the moment when your temperature starts to rise during effort, so you can wear it for a long time without reaching that threshold of being soaked in perspiration.
The other very interesting point is that it dries very quickly.
Despite it being quite voluminous, the DHB Aeron Polartec Alpha Direct vest compresses very easily and fits in the back pocket of your jersey. What would be perfect is an ultra-light little pocket, like you have with a down jacket, to pack the vest down into even more.
The DHB has very ventilated fabric under the arms and a soft cozy collar. Depending on its size, we noticed the elastic under the arm, it doesn’t really bother you: we realize that this area must be kept flattened to the body and not open with the wind. The back is flashy green for road safety. Three (small pockets) in the back allow you to slide in some kits, storage space which come in addition to the jersey’s.
The fabric protects the lower back well. We would have liked a little more length at the front. The waist has a silicone band to prevent the DHB Aeron Polartec Alpha Direct from rising up too much. The central zip is efficient and slides easily. The minimalist cursor does not hit you on the chin with the wind and doesn’t make it too thick with a windproof over the top against it.
Odors are limited over several days of use. The succession of washes doesn’t damage the vest, its performances and appearance remain the same.
The DHB Polartec Alpha Direct Sleeveless Vest is a highly effective thermal protection layer whilst cycling. It allows you to cope with the times when you lose heat: downhill, wind and low temperature. It is light and warm, it is a coherent and technical solution for all outings.
