The Forclaz 30L to 40L Duffel 500 Extend is a modular and adaptable travel bag that draws inspiration from the classic duffel format, with the added bonus of an expandable volume—from 30 to 40 liters. It’s crafted from a water-resistant canvas that’s also abrasion-resistant, striking a balance between flexibility and durability. While the fabric isn’t fully waterproof, it offers solid protection in wet conditions for short to medium use.
The main compartment is accessed via a large, wide-opening zip that feels robust and smooth to operate. On either side of this central opening, two handles allow for hand carry. However, once the bag is fully packed, these handles tend to press flat against the fabric, making them harder to grab—especially with gloves, which may be a drawback in colder environments.
One of the highlights of this bag is its ability to convert into a backpack using the two included adjustable shoulder straps. We appreciated the small but essential addition of a sternum strap, which helps distribute the load and adds comfort during longer carries. On one side, a discreet zippered pocket offers space for travel documents, keys, or a wallet, while the opposite side includes an additional grip handle that feels sturdy and ergonomic when carrying the bag by hand.
Volume management is handled via six compression straps—four located on the sides, and two at the ends. These allow the user to cinch the bag down efficiently depending on the amount of gear inside. During our test, we overloaded the bag to its full 40-liter capacity and noticed that the top and bottom straps could no longer be secured, which left them hanging loose. This could potentially lead to snags or inconvenience during travel, especially in tight storage compartments.
Inside the duffel, two mesh pockets at either end are perfect for stashing smaller items like toiletries or a small book. There’s also a dedicated slot on the top for adding an ID card or business card—an appreciated touch for travel purposes. Despite its soft structure, the bag holds its shape reasonably well and packs easily.
In terms of overall use, the Forclaz Duffel 500 Extend proved to be an efficient, well-designed option for short trips or weekend escapes. Its dimensions are compatible with cabin luggage restrictions, and while it may not match the ruggedness of more premium duffel models on the market, it compensates with its compressibility and comfort. The fabric is slightly less robust but far more pliable and easier to stow when not in use.
In the end, it’s a versatile and thoughtfully designed bag that doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. It may lack a few refinements—such as reinforced grab points or fully waterproof zips—but for the price, it delivers exactly what’s needed: a solid, functional duffel with just the right amount of features. A strong value pick for travelers who want lightweight efficiency without breaking the bank.
