The Frosty New is a new inflatable mattress; of course “auto-inflatable” does mean you have to finish off inflation by blowing some air in. But this is pretty easy and doesn’t require much extra effort. The dimensions are standard: 180cm in length, perfect for those who are smaller. If you are taller your feet will be off the end, which is not very pleasant. But for now apparently there is only one size. Same for the width which is 51cm, perfect for average size builds. If you are larger – it’s a bit narrow.
Despite its 2.5cm thickness it provides excellent comfort and good thermal insulation.
We only tested it in summer conditions, needs to be tested for three seasons. But due to its construction it should be efficient on coldish ground. Once folded up it measures 26X15cm, which is quite small for an auto-inflatable mattress in this category. It is important to know that with auto-inflatable mattresses you have more robustness and very often more stability.
The size/weight ratio is correct. The 610g fits well into this lightweight mattress category. The materials are tough and you don’t slide around on it much once in your sleeping bag, obviously when it is on flat ground, sloping ground gravity comes into play…
The finishing is good, strong stitching and the valve seems tough in short-term use, to be confirmed in long-term use. On this type of product the wear and tear of this particular piece is average.
The Frosty New is a good ally for trekking, a tough and efficient product with excellent weight/quality/price ratio. It’s a shame that there are not several sizes and a ¾ length version for lightweight trekking and bivouacking.
