The French brand Julbo gives a flurry of youth to the Renagade, style as well as protection from the sun in the technical range.
These sunglasses, as Julbo describes them: “are just as happy out on a single track, or sitting on a terrace enjoying a cappuccino !..”
We mostly used these for trail running and hiking. The style of these glasses mean that you can wear them anywhere, anytime. Obviously these glasses are not vey curved so they don’t give you the same extent of protection laterally or the same air flow (needed for MTB, road biking). We did notice a few reflections on the edges in lateral lighting.
As usual we particularly appreciated the Julbo lenses, the quality is both luminous, very reactive to changing light intensities, no lateral deformations and they respect the slightest detail. Also they don’t have any color distortions, which is sometimes noticeable on other sunglasses brands.
The lenses in the model we tested were the Réactiv photochromic Zebra Light. Their UV protection goes automatically up to 3. We also used these glasses for driving and they were perfect. As soon as you go into shadier areas the Renegade adapts its light filtration immediately. As the protection only goes up to grade-3 these glasses are not recommended for skiing or high altitude mountaineering.
We really liked how light they were; lightweight lenses and a frame as light as a feather.
The only thing we didn’t really like was the cheap looking plastic (these glasses that cost 130 euros…), they make squeaky sounds when you fiddle with the hinges… The arms loosen, and then they don’t remain tight on your face. This is the same if you want to slide them on top of your head: they don’t grip.
One good point : the semi-rigid protective case and the fabric bag are well-designed.
The Renegade does give a trendy look in the world of sport. The lens quality is undeniable. We were less convinced by the frame.

They don’t work at all. So light they have no shading properties, and they don’t change in any light at all.
